Shaker cabinets are known for their simple and timeless design, which originated from the Shaker furniture style popularized by the Shaker religious community in the 18th century. They continue to be popular today, perhaps even the most popular style of kitchen cabinets.
Defining Shaker Cabinets
What makes a cabinet style Shaker? It’s pretty simple really. Each cabinet door and drawer has five panels which make up its construction. Four of the panels make up the frame of the door, and are of equal width. These are all thicker than the 5th panel, which is recessed behind, and framed by, the rest of the panels. It’s like a simple, rectangular picture frame with the same color canvas in the center!
While the basic principles of Shaker cabinets remain the same, there are variations in the details and finishes that can create different styles. Here are some different Shaker style kitchen cabinets for your consideration.
Shaker Style Kitchen Cabinets
Classic White
The classic white Shaker is probably the cabinet you visualize when you think of Shaker cabinets. It is simple, straightforward and endlessly stylish. This style features clean lines, square edges, and recessed panels. The cabinet doors typically have a flat center panel surrounded by a frame with straight rails and stiles.
One of our bestsellers is the Weston White Shaker. It’s a framed cabinet in a crisp white that blends with any design. It’s great for the kitchen, bathroom, or beyond.
Beaded Inset Shaker
This style adds a decorative touch to the classic Shaker design by incorporating beaded detailing on the inside edges of the cabinet door frames. The beadwork adds visual interest and can create a more traditional or vintage look.
Consider our Springfield Shaker, a barely-there greige color suited to warm or cool color palettes.
Tiered Inset Shaker
Much like the beaded inset, the tiered inset has a square trim on the inside edge of the cabinet door. It adds a tiny hint of detail that dresses up the Shaker style but still maintains its traditional qualities.
Florence Shaker is our most popular cabinet in this style. It comes in gray, white, blue, and slate.
Non-White Shaker
We have more than a dozen white and white-based options. From bright white and dove gray to beige and ivory, there are plenty of neutrals to choose from. But stepping outside the traditional can add some punch to your kitchen design.
The color of the moment is blue. We offer two deep blue options in the Shaker style, Florence Midnight Blue, and Navy Blue Shaker.
Two-Tone Shaker
This style combines two different finishes or colors on the upper and lower cabinets or different finishes on the island and perimeter. For example, the upper cabinets may have a white finish while the lower cabinets have a contrasting color like gray or navy.
Two-tone Shaker cabinets can add visual interest and dimension to the kitchen. Generally, the more neutral color will make up the majority of the cabinets with the accent color making up the difference.
The combination of colors you use is up to your personal preference, but we’ve noticed that many love to combine white and blue Shaker cabinets or any color with a natural wood Shaker cabinet.
Rustic Shaker
If you have a rustic style kitchen, a wood Shaker is the ideal match. Wood Shaker cabinets pair natural wood in a traditional style and it slides perfectly into modern farmhouse, provincial, or industrial designs.
Try the Carolina Hickory or Rustic Shaker cabinet for a knotty, grained aesthetic. Hickory features a warm honeyed color with dramatic imperfections and Rustic Shaker has a deeper walnut look and more even grain.
One of the best things about Shaker cabinets is their versatility. By combining various finishes, hardware choices, and design elements, you can customize Shaker cabinets to suit your personal taste and the overall aesthetic of your kitchen.
